Tips for Writing Romance Novels

Not only are romance novels always at the top of the bestsellers lists, romance novelists are routinely the most likely writers to live off their work. For those thinking of embarking in the world of romance writing, here are four tips for writing romance novels.

Treat it like the job that it is. There’s nothing romantic about being a romance novelist, it’s a lot of hard work and discipline for those who succeed, and those who succeed do so because they approach it as they would any other job.

Set a daily word goal. In the writing world, success means sales and volume. That volume doesn’t come from an idea carefully nurtured until it flourishes, it comes from set quantities that are observed daily, not weekly or monthly. If one day’s count isn’t met, it gets tacked on to the next day’s.

Time yourself, but don’t forget to take breaks. Writing is a job, and for any job to be worthwhile it has to break down to a reasonable hourly wage. Set a time cap on your daily word count, but don’t forget to take mental and physical breaks in between bursts of writing to keep the creative juices flowing.

Just move on. If you can’t quite find the right word, rather than laboring over a single line for minutes on end, drop a place filler and move on to the rest. The passage can be revisited at a later time with a fresh perspective.

Why Some Long Distance Relationships Don’t Last

Long distance relationships take a lot of hard work and determination, but sometimes, despite all of that hard work, they just don’t last. While absence can definitely make the heart grow fonder, sometimes the distance can just be too much to bare, and sometimes there are a few other factors at play as well. Here are three of the reasons why some long distance relationships just don’t last.

Too much talk. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Some couples feel like they may have to make up for distance by communicating more frequently. The key to communication in this case, however, is quality over quantity. You may not need to know every detail of each other’s day, focusing on the important aspects keeps the lines of communication open while keeping the relationship fresh and avoids getting on each others nerves.

Not enough trust. Some couples communicate far too frequently not just because they want to know about the other’s day, but because they want to make sure their significant other hasn’t been up to anything behind their backs. Trust is essential to any relationship, and a relationship that doesn’t begin with trust is doomed to fail be it long distance or not.

Incompatible relationship goals. A big deal-breaker in long distance relationships can be a difference in goals. If the two of you will never see eye to eye on where to live, it may be best to be clear with each other and avoid some long term heartbreak. Being on the same page with your significant other when it comes to future plans can strengthen your bond and is a sure sign that the distance is only temporary, but when goals and desires just can’t be reconciled, hope for the future of the relationship may be fleeting.

Reasons Why Relationships Don’t Last

Whether you’re looking for love, have found it, or you’re trying to make it work, it’s important to know just how a relationship could work in the long term, and the reasons why it might not. Here are three reasons why some relationships never make it to happily ever after.

A lack of communication. "How was work, honey?" doesn't really count as communication. Telling your significant other how you truly feel and really opening up to them on a regular basis is an important foundational block to any relationship. Being receptive to how they're feeling is every bit as important. A lack of this sort of open and honest communication is a huge reason why many relationships don't last.

A lack of compromise. It's a big one, and it's not always easy, but compromising is without a doubt one of the most important aspects to a long lasting relationship. Compromise doesn’t just mean settling on which movie to watch, it means ensuring that your life goals and priorities are aligned for the long term, and a lack of compromise can often mean a couple’s undoing.

A lack of long term goals. We’re not just talking about goals for the couple here, we’re talking about personal and professional goals as well. Often times when people don’t have their plans figured out as individuals it can have a negative effect on the couple. Be true to yourself, know what you want, then look for someone to share your goals with.

Signs Your Relationship May Be Moving Too Quickly

Butterflies in your stomach and lightness in your step? You may just be in love, and what a wonderful feeling it is! While many of us are looking for love, be it through online dating, dates set up through friends, or going out and meeting people at the bar, it’s important to know when things are moving too quickly with that special someone we’ve just met. There’s no shame in slowing things down, here are some of the signs that your relationship may be moving too quickly.

You just got out of a relationship. Rebounds happen, but when they do, it’s time to ask if you really want the person you’re with or if you just want a person to be with.

There’s been no serious conversation about the relationship. It’s all well and good to let your feelings carry you away, but it’s best to know what expectations and future plans are like for both sides before diving too deep.

You haven’t met their friends or family. If you’re seeing a lot of each other, but none of the people in each other’s lives, it may be a sign that your significant other is trying to hide something, or you may be what they’re trying to hide.

It’s purely physical. If the two of you are all over each other but there’s not much talk before or after, it may be best to take a step back and ask what you really like about the person and where that could ultimately lead.
